Created by Keema Echols of GrandmaGoneWild, this guide goes far beyond basic genealogy questions and encourages deeper conversations about family origins, migration, church history, burial sites, military service, segregation, suspicious deaths, family traditions, and the stories many families never fully discussed openly.

Inside, you’ll find thoughtful guidance on how to approach older relatives, what questions to ask, how to ask sensitive questions respectfully, and how to preserve important family history before it is lost. The guide also encourages readers to gather and protect old photographs, obituaries, funeral programs, letters, and other family documents that may hold valuable pieces of their history.

Inspired by Keema’s own journey researching her family and uncovering stories that were nearly lost forever, What I Didn’t Ask was specifically created with Black families in mind and recognizes the unique challenges many African Americans face when tracing their roots.
